Update Log
The legends all said that my abilities couldn't be used for good, that everything I touched would turn to ash. Still, they'd been wrong about so much. I wanted them to be wrong about this too, wanted to be able to save her, and possibly myself as well.
The vampire world by itself was more than deadly enough to force me into the kind of dark decisions that I'd wanted to avoid from the moment I realized what I was. I couldn't have found Melody at a worse time, but I just couldn't bring myself to abandon her. I should have. She wasn't the link to my past that I'd been desperately craving. My very existence put her in a danger, but something kept pulling me back to her. Maybe it was her innate goodness. It seemed to warm the frozen fragments of my humanity. The war, unanticipated as it was, seemed like the perfect chance to win my freedom and save us both. I hadn't realized the price it would extract. Hadn't realized just home important the one link I did have to my past would become.
Story Length: 73,000 words
Author's Note: The Searching Souls series has expanded in scope incredibly from where I originally envisioned it. The Greater Darkness (TGD) was written largely because I wanted to explore some of the more intriguing story elements possible with an immortal protagonist who's physical nature was at odds with his belief system. Both a sequel and a prequel suggested themselves almost as soon as I finished TGD, but I chose to pursue work on The Trial first and haven't made it back to Geoffry's story yet. Long term with regards to the Searching Souls, both of the projects I'm currently working on, Broken and Torn, are set in the same universe as TGD. Ultimately I'd like to use the various books in the series to tell a much larger story arc by relating the tales of a host of different people. I expect that as the series progresses we'll see a number of common characters come to dominate center stage, but as much as possible I'd like to keep adding new faces as we go.
