I've recently noticed an interesting phenomenon in my own writing. It isn't something that I've been paying attention to long enough to really substantiate, but it seems I can improve the result of my writing efforts with music.
It's something that I think makes sense as one of the purposes of writing is to evoke emotion in the reader, and music has long been known to have the ability to create or re-invoke emotions in the listener.
I recently completed the rough draft of a scene that I looked back at and actually felt like it had exactly hit the effect I was looking for. A few minutes later I looked down at my Ipod and realized that the song I'd been listening to for the last hour or so evoked exactly the same emotions in me that I was trying to create in my readers.
It may have been sheer coincidence, and I'm not saying that the right music selection during the course of writing a novel will magically turn it into a best seller, but it just may make writing that tricky scene a tad bit easier.
